DICK SCOTT NAMED AD PERSON OF THE YEAR
Richmond, VA. The Board of Directors of the Advertising Club of Richmond has named Richard J. Scott, president and chief executive officer of Edelmann Scott Inc., the 1999 Ad Person of the Year. Fred Moore, president of the Club, shared the news with Scott and his team during a closed presentation at the agency on Friday, April 7. The announcement was made public in conjunction with The Richmond Show, the Club's annual advertising award program, on Friday, May 12.
"Dick Scott is a remarkable leader," according to Moore. "He is clearly dedicated to the advancement of the advertising industry. Not just here in Richmond, but throughout Virginia and the mid-Atlantic region."
Scott is co-founder and five-term president of the Virginia Advertising Coalition, a statewide agency alliance he formed to assure favorable legislative treatment of the advertising industry by the State of Virginia's Department of Taxation. He is also a past president of the Advertising Club of Richmond and one of the instrumental organizers of the VCU Adcenter student scholarship.
Scott and partner Ed Edelmann co-founded Edelmann Scott Inc. in 1980 with the simply philosophy that when clients invest money in advertising, they expect to get it back in the form of increased sales and profits. Two decades later, the agency is still driven by this return-on-investment mindset. He is nationally recognized as an expert in business-to-business marketing.
"Our process at Edelmann Scott, which we developed more than 15 years ago, replaces the 'I thinks' with 'The market says', says Scott. "Show me a client with a problem, and we can use our MarketVision process to help solve that problem." The process, he says, has tripled sales for a regional telecom client, increased marketshare for a packaged goods account at the expense of two leading national brands and helped a local hardware client actually increase sales during the market entry of a major national competitor.
The agency's core competencies include business-to-business, real estate, telecommunications and consumer products. Clients include Reynolds Metals, Hamilton Beach, Dominion Land Management, The Governor's Land at Two Rivers, CFW Communications, Intelos PCS Communications, Ocean Ridge Plantation, Stonehouse and the Virginia Winegrowers Advisory Board.
